1 u& y( F; }2 R: a

The defeat of the Chinese Imperial forces in the 2nd Opium War (1856-1860) was secured by the final advance on Peking in the summer of 1860. The combined British and French forces re-captured the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho river on 21st August and then advanced up-river, finally reaching Peking on 22nd Spetember 1860. With the allies arrival, the Emperor went into exile and the Summer Palace was burnt by the British. 3 N0 {/ g7 Y( S
Louis Aubaret commanded the French vessel 'Pregent' in the battle fleet of Admiral Charner. The present maps detail the chronology of the advance of a contingent of French forces from the Taku forts to Yuanmingyuan (The Summer Palace) and the details of all the camps and actions.
